Types of Dogs

by Suzie

Who says you can’t buy happiness? Of course you can, when you buy a dog.

No matter how little money and how few possessions you own, having a dog makes you rich.

Spoilt for choice

But there are so many types of dog around today, that we’re spoilt for choice.

There are more than 150 types of dogs currently padding along this earth; recognised breeds, that is. Then there are numerous variations on the theme… fascinating crossbreeds and mixed-up mongrels.

One of the first questions the potential dog-owner should ask himself is whether he wants to buy an upmarket pedigree dog, or choose a previously unwanted animal from a rescue centre giving away free puppies or older dogs.

Good with children?

After that, all sorts of factors have to be taken into account.

How much space do you have to accommodate the newcomer? How much exercise can you afford to give him? What about his sleeping arrangements? Accessories like dog collars? Grooming? Feeding?

Even more important for families considering adding a dog to their household is how well the new arrival is likely to get on with children. Or with other animals.

Bringing great rewards

Size is important too. Do you want a large dog, a small dog, an adult dog or a puppy?

The advantageeof taking on a puppy – or a couple of puppies – is that there should be no bad habits to undo because these little animals can be trained from the moment they set paw inside your home.

On the other hand, an older pet dog might be a more sensible choice. Re-homing a dog with problems and working on those problems together can bring great rewards.

Keeping each other company

Some dog breeders maintain that where cost is not the prime factor, it is good to have two dogs rather than one, then they can keep each other company and not be lonely when the family have to go out and leave them briefly to their own resources. They recommend keeping small puppies in suitably equipped large cages until they are house-trained and unlikely to wreck the home in the owner’s absence.

Most popular breeds

Rescue dogs are always delighted to be rehomed. And they are a great source of pleasure for those who adopt them.

The most popular breeds are usually snapped up first.

These types of dogs include Labradors, spaniels, German Shepherds, Boxers, terriers, poodles, with small dogs a popular choice for the elderly.

And here’s a final thought to dwell on: When you feel dog tired at night, it may be because you’re growled all day.
